Plenary 03 - Rev. Dr. Celestin Musekura

Forgiveness happens within interpersonal relationships. Because we live in community of sinners, we are bound to hurt each other both unintentionally and by our sinful nature. As we live in families and communities, the way we related and treat each other could bless us or cause pain and hurt in our lives and families. Forgiveness allows us to give up our right to be right and give up the anger, resentment, and bitterness towards our offender. Drawing from my Rwandan experience and the biblical texts, I will guide the participants to understand the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation and how forgiveness promotes and sustains genuine reconciliation.

Workshop 01 - Reconciling When They Are Angry

Anger itself is an emotion common to all people. It is a natural reaction to threats, injuries, unjust, cruel or evil treatment of self or others. Yet anger is all too often expressed in ways that are harmful. Anger can devastate marriages, separate children and parents, cause division within the church and poison other relationships. Anger can be either righteous or unjust. This workshop will present a new Bible study downloadable from Ambassadors of Reconciliation.

Workshop 02 - Careless Talk's Impact on Reconciliation

Do words really have power? It is important to control the tongue, not only to avoid hurting other people emotionally, physically, and spiritually. An uncontrolled tongue can also turn on the uncontrolled talker, corrupting the whole person, poisoning his or her mind and actions. This Bible study entitled Careless Talk rather than Gossip or Slander or other common descriptions explores how the words we use can either exacerbate or calm the conflicts we encounter daily. This workshop is available as a Bible study from AoR’s bookstore and coordinates with the bookmark by the same name.

Workshop 05 - Redeeming Our Hope In Power

A compelling vision of power dynamics for the church - Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of interpersonal dynamics to understand is power. All relationships have power dynamics at work that continuously shape the level of impact we have on one another. It is essential for leaders (in particular) to pay closer attention to the ways power is at work in their relationships, in order to steward it more effectively. Together we will examine the different types of power and how to assess our own power thoughtfully, intentionally, and redemptively. How leaders steward power ultimately enables people to move toward greater flourishing or towards oppression. As Andy Crouch states, "who is flourishing because I am using power?" Examining the use of power is also a window to assess the relational health in a church. In a healthy church, power is regularly and consciously stewarded to empower the vulnerable, weak, and needy to flourish in a covenant relationship.

Workshop 12 - Finding Hope for Discouraged Parties

“Nothing’s working…the situation is imploding…I don’t know what to do!” Phrases like this are not uncommon when someone is overwhelmed with conflict and life. The Psalmist could relate; “I’m weary with my moaning…I flood my bed with tears…I have sorrows in my heart all day.” Discouragement is too tame a word for experiences like these. Proverbs 13:12 does a better job, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” How can we help a party go from a downcast soul to trusting in God, the lifter of our heads? In this workshop we will explore how to understand the experience of suffering so that we can encourage parties to have ears to hear God’s voice and eyes to see the power of His presence in suffering.
