A Brother Offended

2020-08-28

People often come into a mediation with suspicion, frustration, and an agenda. The mediator can easily become a target of that suspicion and frustration if they do not carefully navigate the tumultuous waters of the conflict set before them. In this workshop we will consider some important principles of how we can avoid becoming a third party to the conflict we are mediating by drawing on wisdom from the Proverbs.

A Case in Point: Using Case Studies to Help Parties Apply Peacemaking Principles

2020-09-17

People experiencing conflict in relationships can benefit from working with “Case Studies” that deepen their understanding of peacemaking principles by applying them to scenarios similar to their own conflict. Applying the principles to characters in the case study provides a bridge to being able to apply those same principles to themselves. We will discuss several ideas for such case studies and the workshop formats that can assist parties in deepening their understanding of heart idolatry, confession, repentance, and forgiveness. You will come away with new tools in your reconciliation toolkit!

Bitterness

2020-08-17

When you are offended or disappointed by others, bitterness and resentment may germinate in your heart. Satan thrives on unforgiveness in a bitter, sour Christian. Learn to recognize when bitterness begins to take root in your heart. Then, rejoice in the victory that is yours in Christ over this destructive passion. This workshop is available as a Bible study from AoR’s bookstore and coordinates with the bookmark by the same name.

Building Interfaith Bridges: Equipping Reconcilers in an Inter Religious/ Faith Context

2020-09-04

Conflicts are unavoidable aspects where human beings interact. While there are different ways of managing, resolving or transforming conflicts, there is need for life skills that enable each human being to coexist with others despite their differences, and to make relationships a source of strength/synergy for a better world. Mediation and reconciliation are two key components that ALARM Kenya has embraced in working with different ethnic and religious communities in Kenya. In this workshop, I will highlight the work of reconcilers at the coastal region of Kenya. The key religions of Christianity and Islam have been a source of conflict and violence. In the process of protecting and propagating one’s religion, churches have been burnt, mosques have been used as radicalization centers; making religion a source of profiling, exclusion, and marginalization. ALARM Kenya has contributed to religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence particularly in Mombasa County, through interfaith dialogues among the religious leaders, and among student leaders in selected institutions of learning. This presentation will discuss the key strategies of building the interfaith bridges that has enabled the religious groups to coexist and be reconcilers. I will also present the challenges that ALARM Kenya has faced in the process of equipping the religious groups. Reconciliation can be and should be a lifestyle in the family, church, workplace and community; that is why building bridges is necessary.
