You can begin making progress TODAY! Just login then click Start Today!
Your changes are saved automatically as you enter each field.
Step 1. Preparation
These are steps you can begin NOW! Review each of the links below and click "I Affirm" for each that matches your convictions. Your responses are preserved so you can review them next time you login at this page.
Your first prerequisites to apply for enrollment in the Certification Training Program are to read and thoroughly study Personal Peacemaking. There are several alternatives available to you. Check those you have completed:
You must also successfully complete both Coaching People to Reconcile and Mediating People to Reconcile training practicums or ICC-approved alternatives. You may apply to the Certification Program prior to completing these courses. This training is valid for five years. The fields below are set by the ICC office to help you track your progress.
Date Coaching People to Reconcile was completed
Date Mediating People to Reconcile was completed
Step 2. Apply to Certification Program
Date the Certification Program Application was received
Request Personal Assessments:
You are required to seek a reference from four (4) individuals who know you well. One person must be your pastor or another church leader; none can be family. Think of it as a professional reference for a job application. Copy this url to send to them so they may provide this reference online: https://www.aorhope.org/surveys/ICC-Applicant-Assessment
You are also required to seek a Declaration of Continuing Fellowship from either a pastor or church leader, who has not submitted an Applicant Assessment. Copy this url to send to them so they may provide this reference online: https://www.aorhope.org/surveys/ICC-Cont-Fellowship
Date the Declaration of Continuing Fellowship Received (office use only)
Date the Certification Program Application was ACCEPTED! (office use only)
Step 3. Enroll in Certification Program
A non-refundable enrollment fee of $750 must be paid AFTER your application is accepted. Once your enrollment fee is received in our office, we will assign an advisor and you may begin the required casework. You may send checks to Ambassadors of Reconciliation, P.O Box 81662, Billings, MT 59108, OR you may pay by credit card with the button below. NOTE: a 3.33% convenience fee is added to credit card payments.
Step 4. Complete Certification Requirements

Tom Ebel is our Reconciler Community Coordinator. While any of us in the office are eager to serve you, you can always set up an appointment with her to ensure your questions are promptly addressed. Your first Enrollment Requirement is to schedule an appointment with the Reconciler Community Coordinator to review the Certification Requirements and explore who will best serve you as an ICC Advisor.
TBD
has been assigned as your advisor.

A. At the time of enrollment in the Certification Program, new Candidates may indicate an ICC Advisor preference if they have a prior relationship with an ICC Advisor. However, because various factors are considered during the assignment process, including an Advisor’s suitability to assist the Candidate in desired areas of growth, there is no guarantee that the preferred Advisor will be assigned.
B. Your ICC Advisor is a Certified Christian Conciliator™ assigned for the duration of your candidacy to provide consistent case support, encouragement, and wisdom using biblical peacemaking principles. He or she has your best interest in mind as you begin your first conflict coaching and mediation cases. Your Advisor will supervise and evaluate your Case Reports. You are asked to email your ICC Advisor prior to officially accepting a coaching or conciliation case so he or she can be aware of case specifics and advise you accordingly. You will submit case reports to your advisor for approval.
C. It is the Candidate’s responsibility to update his/her Advisor, stay connected through email, and initiate requests for appointments to discuss upcoming cases or updates. Advisors can recommend additional training or studies to strengthen needed skills. Be sure to discuss with your advisor a routine check-in schedule.
D. With your enrollment you are granted a 3-year Christian Reconciler - Vocational membership. ($450 value)
E. ICC Candidates will also be responsible for participating in regular meetings with other candidates and invest in their growth through CCC or Author interviews, annual graduations and other opportunities. All of these are recorded and are made available on the ICC Candidate Reconciler Forum.
Case Experience:
Upon enrollment, new candidates begin casework to complete the required 50 hours of conflict coaching and biblical mediation cases with case report oversight from an assigned ICC Advisor. A total of 10 cases are required, at least five of which must be mediation cases.
It is up to each candidate to develop opportunities in their local church or community. The ICC does not provide cases. The ICC will encourage candidates as they raise awareness in their community and church about ways to resolve conflict in a biblically faithful manner.
Qualifying Cases
What is a Qualifying Conflict Coaching, Mediation, or Arbitration Case?
Conflict Coaching
-
Conflict Coaching is one-to-one care to help an individual process and manage the conflict they are experiencing.
-
Coaching is focused on issues of conflict and resolving those issues to take personal ownership for causing conflict. The goal is confession and forgiveness and reconciliation.
-
A Conflict Coach guides the parties to discover heart issues (heart idols) that are causing conflict with others and God, leading the party to confess them to God and others.
-
A Conflict Coach also guides the discovery of the idols leading to deceit and blind spots that prevent parties from following the wise and loving scriptural wisdom. With this understanding, a person can confess wrong and begin transformative change.
-
Conflict Coaching is not Counseling
-
Counseling therapy helps individuals through a series of short appointments to address underlying roots and memories at the core of their emotions and beliefs.
-
A counselor guides their client through a discovery method to better understand their thoughts and feelings and beliefs throughout their behavioral timeline. It is primarily focused on the "self" of the client, and secondarily "others" and in biblical counseling their right relationship with God according to the Word.
-
Counseling cases do not qualify as certification cases.
-
Mediation
-
Mediation is working with two or more parties together, to improve communication and understanding so that the parties can arrive at a voluntary agreement.
-
A mediation consisting of only “shuttle diplomacy,” where the mediator never meets with both parties together in the same room, is not mediation for purpose of the Certification Program.
-
Case administration and management is key. Candidates can choose to have ICC administer their cases or administrate their own cases. Cert advisor will watch carefully for wise management of the case. However, the candidate must be the case administrator on at least two (2) cases.
Arbitration
-
An arbitration can include an informal rendering of a decision on one or more issues, by agreement of the parties, presented in the context of 1 Corinthians 6:1-8.
-
However, arbitration is generally a court-approved process that can be enforceable by authorities, not the arbitrator, not the ICC community, not ICC.
-
A Candidate will rarely be asked to arbitrate a conflict by providing a decision for the parties. We discourage Candidates from arbitrating during their candidacy and before they have specifically undergone training and a practicum especially for arbitration.
-
It is a risk for an inexperienced Certified Christian Conciliator™ or Candidate to present to parties that they are qualified to serve as an arbitrator in most cases.
-
It is a risk for a mediator to shift to the role of an arbitrator, taking prior knowledge into the arbitration process for binding judgment, even when the parties feel initially that it would be easier to have someone "in the know."
-
It is a risk for a Candidate or Certified Christian Conciliator™ to serve as an arbitrator without having liability insurance.
-
ICC recommends that Advisors who supervise an arbitration case be highly skilled, experienced, and knowledgeable about the legal implications of arbitration.
-
Cases with Non-Christians
There are times when non-Christians, or court-ordered mediations may be brought to a Candidate for conciliation assistance. This is an opportunity to give some preparatory information to the parties about what makes our "ADR" uniquely different. ADR is a common term for "alternative dispute resolution." While the ICC provides "faith-based" ADR, an explanation of what "faith-based" means and the value of biblically faithful Conciliation is needed.
Cert Advisors can explore how a Candidate might explain the good news of Jesus Christ in context with how it benefits the conflict resolution. This is not a time to proselytize. Wisdom is needed and respect for those who request Christian Conciliation.
Advisors are ready to explore with the Candidate about how they will approach cases with non-Christians or parties compelled to mediate through the ICC because of contract or court-ordered arrangements.
Cases Involving Abuse
We can't stress enough how important the initial assessment questions are in giving "red flag" warnings about abuse. Cases involving any of the following should be first discussed with your Advisor: powering over, manipulative control, a cycle of honeymoon, tension, explosion, walking on eggshells, a victim who has been so undermined as to lose their voice/value/volition, and especially any threat of punishment that includes silent treatment, spiritual coercion, or shaming. A Candidate’s foundational training does not prepare them for these complex cases. Advanced coaching and mediation training is required.
Transfer a Non-Qualifying Case
Through pre-mediation assessments, a Candidate and/or Advisor may determine that the Candidate does not have a clear call to handle a case independently. This discernment is actually a wise boundary especially when Candidates are under pressure to complete their required cases.
In this situation, please contact the ICC and request a lead Certified Christian Conciliator™ to work with the candidate (if this is not something that the Advisor would like to do). ICC can provide case administration if required. Joint cases referred to the ICC will require non-refundable fees and perhaps a different fee structure, but we can assist by helping create a team and giving full credit to the Candidate for their hours on the case. The ICC reserves the right to decline some cases that are referred.
Co-Conciliation with other Certified Christian Conciliator™
Candidates are encouraged to seek opportunities to co-conciliate (either as lead Conciliators or Co-Conciliators) with experienced Certified Christian Conciliator™. When the Candidate co-conciliates, the Candidate is required to submit a Co-Conciliator evaluation. The Cert Advisor is encouraged to review the evaluation with the assisting Certified Christian Conciliator™ and share the results of the evaluation with the Candidate. The co-conciliator is required to provide Reconciler Feedback through the Candidate's Christian Reconciler™ Profile.
Co-Conciliating with your Advisor
Each Cert Advisor is strongly encouraged to include a Candidate as a Co-Conciliator when possible. Cert Advisors may also assist the Candidate in locating another Certified Christian Conciliator™ who is amenable to working with Candidates and has a case ready. After such cases, you and the Co-Conciliator should talk to discuss the responsibilities the Candidate successfully completed and any concerns or suggestions for additional training. This is in addition to the form feedback. Such Co-Conciliation opportunities may also occur by encouraging the Candidate to include Co-Conciliators at the outset on suitable cases for which the Candidate is selected as a lead Conciliator.
Co-Conciliation Specifics
-
Additional costs of Co-Conciliation must be clearly communicated to the parties during the initial discussion of fees.
-
The Candidates, where costs may be a factor to the parties, are requested to waive their fees to permit the Co-Conciliation with the Certification Advisor.
-
Upon completion of a Co-Conciliation with a Candidate, the Cert Advisor or the Certified Christian Conciliator™ is required to complete the Co-Conciliation evaluation within 30 days.

Evaluations
A key component of a training program is the ability to provide the participants and the instructors with meaningful evaluations and feedback. Evaluations allow (1) the Candidates to improve, and (2) help the Cert Advisors provide the most effective evaluations. Advisor-Candidate relationships have consistently been the backbone of the ICC certification program from the beginning of the ICC. Accountability also helps ICC to maintain the integrity and quality of the Certified Christian Conciliator™ designation, thus providing the church and Christian community with high quality Conciliation services.
Evaluations of Case Reports
Evaluations at time of Assignment
When a Candidate is assigned to a Cert Advisor, the Advisor is provided with access to the Candidate’s application file, which will contain the application essays, personal assessments, as well as the instructor evaluations from the Candidate’s Conflict Coaching and Mediation Training. The Advisor will also have access to the Candidate's recorded role play exercises from practicum trainings. These materials will assist the Cert Advisor in efforts to guide and assist the Candidate to improve upon their weak areas and to affirm their strong areas.
Evaluations during the Ten (10) Required Cases
Your on-going evaluations (the brief Candidate Updates and the long-form Case Report Evaluations) will require you to be familiar with the case forms used to report their cases. You will need to be able to answer questions regarding how to complete the forms, help the Candidates to understand the information being requested, and assist them when necessary to accurately and fully complete the form. These Case Report forms are detailed because of the importance of the Certification process. Being both strict and gracious about thorough case reporting is important. It helps Candidates to remind them that the Graduation Review Committee will be reading the same reports to recreate the case process to fully understand the “process model” used in a Candidate’s Conciliation.
Final Step in Approving Cases
Candidates complete the online Case Report form for each case submitted to their Cert Advisor. Upon submission it is sent automatically to the ICC and the Cert Advisor but it is not yet approved. Cert Advisors have the responsibility to protect the integrity of the Certification network by only approving cases that you believe represent biblically faithful conciliation experience. Your approval needs to be completed online (in the green Advisor Approval section of each case report visible only to Advisors. Please ensure that all case requirements have been met and that Conciliation Evaluations have been sent out, before you approve a case for Certification.
Waiving Feedback Evaluations from Parties
You do have the option of waiving the Conciliation Evaluation requirement on up to three cases – but we encourage you to require the evaluations in most circumstances. Since it is generally true that it is difficult to obtain the evaluations, every effort should be made to communicate that the feedback is desired, resending the request as needed.
Teaching Experience:
Candidates are required to have at least one teaching experience. Taking the required course Teaching a Reconciliation Seminar will help candidates prepare for this teaching assignment. Teaching on reconciliation can also build passport to serve as a conciliator. Consider teaching reconciliation in your own church or another church. There are no specified hours for this teaching event. The Reconciler Community Coordinator will approve this teaching.

Annual Extension Fee (due by 3rd anniversary of enrollment)
The Certification Program is a one (1) to three (3) year process. A $250* extension fee is charged annually for extensions beyond the first three (3) years. You may send checks to Ambassadors of Reconciliation, P.O Box 81662, Billings, MT 59108, OR you may pay by credit card with the button below. NOTE: a 3.33% convenience fee is added to credit card payments.
Step 5. Certification Final Review
During the review process, a Candidate Review committee considers the entirety of the work done during their candidacy prior to approval for graduation. The review includes the ICC Advisor recommendation, instructor evaluations, case reports and evaluations, feedback, and pastoral references. Graduates can be conferred the designation of ICC Certified Christian Conciliator™.
Final Evaluations of Candidate
It is the Advisor's responsibility to recommend for Certification those Candidates with whom they truly have confidence as Christian Conciliators. It is not enough to simply “put in the hours.” The Institute for Christian Conciliation will only certify Conciliators who are gifted, called, and sufficiently experienced.
If you do not recommend the Candidate for Certification, please set forth in detail your observations and reasons so we can assist the Candidate in reaching Certification. The Graduation Review Committee will review this document (along with the Candidate’s entire Certification file) to determine whether the designation Certified Christian Conciliator™ should be granted.
Every Candidate for Certification is reviewed by a committee consisting of three (3) experienced Certified Christian Conciliator™ on staff with ICC. The committee reviews the entirety of the Candidate file, and specifically evaluations of cases and training. The Advisor may also be asked to discuss a particular Candidate with the Graduation Review Committee if such is deemed necessary for the approval process.
In the event of a determination to not certify a Candidate, the Certification Advisor will be contacted by ICC to discuss the Candidate.
Good communication throughout the Case Reports should establish any areas needing improvement, especially when the Advisor has concerns that the Candidate is not prepared to be an independent Certified Christian Conciliator™. Please contact the ICC with specific information about any concerns you have about your Candidate’s success. As previously stated, the Certification process is to ensure Certification is conferred on Candidates who are gifted, called and sufficiently experienced. The process, however, is not intended to simply drop Candidates. In the event of a determination not to certify, the Certification Advisor and ICC will develop a plan for further preparation and equipping of the Candidate in an effort to prepare the Candidate for future Certification if the Candidate agrees to the plan and successfully completes it. The plan may involve further teaching, reading and Co-Conciliation opportunities along with additional supervised experienced cases.
Evaluation of the Certification Advisor
It is equally important that the Certification Advisor seek to review and measure their service as Advisors to the Candidate. Each Candidate will be asked to complete a Certification Advisor evaluation at the end of the Certification Program period.
Candidate Complaints Against Certification Advisors
Candidate complaints against Certification Advisors shall be handled in accordance with Matthew 18:15-17. The ICC shall encourage the Candidate to speak directly with the Certification Advisor about the complaint. If a pattern of complaints emerges, the ICC shall appoint a Certified Christian Conciliator™ to discuss the complaints with the Certification Advisor.
