This workshop presents an alternative model for opening the first joint session in mediation. The presenter shifted to using this model a couple of decades ago, finding that it can more effectively focus the parties on each other’s “story” than the typical beginning of GOSPEL framework. The goal of this model is to invite listening to understand and appreciating the impacts of the circumstances - one might say it is a structured storytelling. A unique aspect of this alternative model is the use of music early in the process to worship together before launching into dialogue. We will further discuss the opportunities for incorporating music into the conciliation process.

This is part of a four-lesson workshop on reconciling relationships and resolving conflict. In this power-packed presentation, you will see how God’s ministry of reconciliation is meant to be lived out in your daily life. You’ll learn practical ways to apply your Christian faith in family, business, church, and legal conflicts. Since all children of God are called to be peacemakers, this workshop is appropriate for every Christian. Church leaders who have responsibilities for teaching and assisting others in their conflicts will find this seminar especially helpful for assisting others to respond to conflict in a biblically faithful manner. This particular workshop focuses on how our identity in Christ impacts the way we see ourselves and others in conflict.

Forgiveness is more frequently preached and discussed in the church than it is practiced. Why this discrepancy? God’s forgiveness, which miraculously delivers us from death into life, is perfect in every respect. Not surprisingly, the breakdown occurs not with God but with His unequivocal command to those He forgives:

You must forgive others as I have forgiven you!

The truth is we don’t. At least we don’t forgive faithfully and consistently. There’s the rub! But wait, everything He requires of us, including forgiving others, is for our benefit, right? Do we believe that? If so, why do we hesitate to forgive others? Are we confused about what he expects? Are we allowing ourselves to be hindered by myths and misunderstandings? Do we just not know the secrets to forgiving well? Let’s answer these questions, unpack the truth, and clear away the obstacles so we can become the relentless forgivers He calls us to be for His glory and the good of ourselves and others!

The armor of God (Ephesians 6:11) is clearly superior to anything that the spiritual forces of evil can use against us! Then why do we find ourselves struggling so much in the relationships that matter to us? Perhaps it’s because we’re not using the armor as God intends it to be used. We’ll learn more about His armor and how to “forgive one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

God in Christ has given and charged us with the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:17-20). Reconciliation is a way of life—not merely a tool for occasional use or a hat to put on when duty calls. We are everyday ambassadors. In this session, learn practical ways to live out the ministry of reconciliation in all that you do, think, and say, whether in your home, workplace, community, or congregation. Become an everyday agent of reconciliation.

Ever wondered why God didn’t say it the other way around - “Love Justice, Show Mercy, Humble Yourself” or something similar? Consider the peacemaking implications of this foundational verse from Micah 6:8 as you are invited to analyze the emphasis afforded to the three imperatives: (1) Do Justice (2) Love Mercy (3) Walk Humbly. May this teaching encourage fellow Christ followers to reflect on how often each of us fails to actually do what the Lord requires, how desperately we need His Spirit at work in us, and how applying God's directives will empower any who love Him to navigate conflict.

Do you ever feel challenged by the way parties communicate (or don’t communicate) in the midst of a conciliation process? In this workshop we’ll identify the main barriers to effective communication, discuss strategies to help parties listen well, express themselves effectively and feel heard as they work through their conflicts. We’ll also touch on ways to be most effective as conciliators in our role as we communicate with, guide, and encourage the parties in conflict coaching and in joint conciliation processes.
