Mental health is always a factor in conflict situations. The conciliator must have a basic understanding of mental health to promote lasting reconciliation. This interactive workshop will discuss various models, explore practical care methods, and equip participants with tools for working with parties in conflict.

Domestic Violence is a devastating and unfortunate reality in our fallen world. We will explore what might be going on in the heart of an abusive man and why this issue is not suitable for marriage mediation until the man repents and shows fruit in keeping with repentance. Proper protocols will be presented as well as thinking how the Bible would put this into the category of oppression.

Cultural norms are to people as water is to fish. Fish are completely surrounded by water and, as such, are unable to recognize it or name it. We are completely “submerged” in social and cultural contexts that we also find difficult to recognize or name. Jolene Kinser spent 15 years living in China, “out of her cultural water” so to speak. While there, she began to see the significant impact that cultural norms have on our responses to conflict and how deeply ingrained they are in us. Though deeply ingrained, she saw first-hand how Christians who “soaked” in God’s new reconciling Kingdom-culture were able to establish new conflict-response norms. God’s Kingdom-culture provides new ways of looking at ourselves, others, our relationships, and even conflict itself.

In this workshop, we’ll explore:

• The nature and impact of cultural norms
• God’s reconciling Kingdom-culture “norms” found in the Bible
• Thinking critically about the cultural norms that guide our responses to conflict—do they align with Scripture?

You’ll leave this workshop with an expanded compassion toward others and yourself as you become more aware of the presence of cultural norms and better able to distinguish between them and God’s reconciling Kingdom-culture.
